Small Patch Gardening

Creativity Through Nature

About

Welcome to Small Patch Gardening

I am 70 years of age now, and gardens have been part of my life for as long as I can remember.

I grew up watching both my mother and my grandmother work in their gardens. Between the two of them, there was always something growing somewhere. Tomatoes along the fence, beans climbing poles, flowers along the porch steps. Like many things passed down quietly in families, gardening simply became part of who I was.

Now my granddaughter has started experimenting with growing things herself. When she asks questions, I am always glad to help. That may be one of the nicest parts of gardening. It moves from one generation to the next without much instruction. Someone plants something, someone else watches, and before long the knowledge is simply there.

For most of my life I gardened simply because I loved it. Planting seeds, turning the soil, watching what grew well and what failed. Some seasons were wonderful and others were lessons.

But something interesting has happened over the past few years. I have become just as interested in the world behind the garden as the garden itself.

There are thousands of seed varieties, seed companies preserving old crops, and gardeners across the country rediscovering plants that nearly disappeared. The deeper I look, the more fascinating the seed world becomes.

So this little site has slowly become something a bit different.

Yes, I still garden in my small patch here in North Florida. My space is modest but more than enough for me.

But these days I spend a lot of time researching the gardening world itself. What seeds people are planting. What heirloom crops are returning. What seed companies are preserving rare varieties. And what trends are shaping the future of small backyard gardens.

Instead of only writing about what happens in my own garden, I now write about what I am discovering as I explore the wider gardening world.

Think of this as a quiet notebook from someone who has spent a lifetime around gardens and is still curious about what grows and why.

From time to time I will share:

• discoveries about heirloom seeds

• interesting seed companies

• forgotten garden vegetables

• trends in home gardening

• small things I learn while digging through the seed world

And occasionally I will mention seeds or tools that caught my attention. If I include a link, it may be an affiliate link, which simply means the site receives a small commission if you choose to purchase something. It costs you nothing extra, and it helps keep the garden notebook going.

My garden patch may be small, but the world of seeds and gardens is very large.

And I am still enjoying learning about it, and at the same time concerned about where the future of food and seeds are headed.

Thanks for stopping by.
